Connect MT5

Your terminal already knows the trade. Stop retyping it.

MetaQuotes publishes no retail API, so most "automatic" MT5 journal syncs route through a paid third-party bridge that holds your broker login. Sage takes the free route: a small Expert Advisor you install in your own MetaTrader 5 terminal. It reads your closed positions and posts them to your journal with an API key. It never sees your broker password, cannot place, modify or close an order, and it captures the one thing statements and CSV exports omit — the stop loss that was active when the trade filled — which is what makes every R-multiple, grade and R:R simulation real.

In the app: Connect MT5

What it is

MetaTrader 5 Automatic Trade Logging, concretely.

Free

No paid bridge, ever

The Expert Advisor is included. There is no per-account subscription for sync and no third party in the path between your terminal and your journal.

Read-only

It cannot trade

The EA reads deal history and posts it. It has no code path that opens, modifies or closes a position, and it never asks for or transmits your broker credentials.

The stop at fill

The field everything depends on

Statements record where a position closed, not the stop it opened with. The EA captures the stop active at fill, so every synced trade has an honest R-multiple, can be auto-graded from evidence, and can be re-simulated at fixed targets.

Durable

Upsert by deal id

Every deal carries its terminal id, so a restart or a re-scan never creates duplicates, and a trade edited in the journal keeps your notes.

One-time

A short setup

Generate an API key in Sage, install the EA, whitelist the journal's URL in the terminal's allowed-URLs list, attach it to a chart. The terminal must be running for the sweep to happen — that is the one trade-off of the free route.

Then think

Add the thinking, skip the typing

Synced trades arrive with instrument, side, prices, times, stop and result. Your job becomes the setup, the play, the tags and a sentence of reasoning — the part only you can supply.

How it works

How a trader actually uses it.

  1. 01

    Create an API key

In Sage, under Connect MT5. The key identifies your journal; it is not a broker credential.

  2. 02

    Install the Expert Advisor

Download the EA, drop it in your terminal's Experts folder, allow the journal URL in the terminal's WebRequest settings, and attach the EA to any chart.

  3. 03

    Trade as usual

Closed positions are posted on a timer and on trade events. Nothing changes about how you trade.

  4. 04

Finish the entry in the journal

Each synced trade is ready for a play, tags, a screenshot and notes — and is already R-scored from the stop at fill.

What it is, and isn't

Straight about the limits.

It does

  • Free automatic logging of closed MetaTrader 5 positions from your own terminal, including the stop active at fill
  • Duplicate-safe upserts by deal id; a review path for trades that need attention
  • Marks synced trades as verified, which is the tier the community leaderboard can rank
  • Works alongside manual logging and CSV import

It doesn't

  • Place, modify or close orders, or hold your broker credentials
  • Support MetaTrader 4 or cTrader by EA — those import via CSV
  • Sync while your terminal is closed; the EA runs inside MT5
  • Cost anything, now or per account

MetaTrader 5 Automatic Trade Logging, answered.

Is the MT5 sync really free?
Yes. It is a free Expert Advisor that runs in your own terminal and posts to your journal. There is no paid bridge and no per-account fee.
Does it need my broker login?
No. The EA runs inside a terminal you have already logged into. It authenticates to Sage with an API key you generate, and it never reads or transmits broker credentials.
Can it place or close trades?
No. It is read-only by construction: there is no code path in the EA that sends an order.
Why does the stop at fill matter so much?
Because R — the multiple of your initial risk — is the unit every honest analysis runs in, and the initial stop defines it. Statements omit it, so most imported trades cannot be R-scored. The EA captures it at the moment of fill.
What about MT4 or cTrader?
Import a CSV export from either; the journal accepts them. Automatic sync by Expert Advisor is MetaTrader 5 only at the moment.
